Optimizing File Size for Web Display - Canon PowerShot ..... Step-by-Step

Find to the left, a photo of a black and white pen illustration taken with a Canon PowerShot. After I took the photo and uploaded it to my computer, I found that it was an alarming 17 MBytes. A size that would take much too long to upload to my blog or website and too much time to download for my visitors.

However, I was able to reduce the file size to a manageable 64 Kbytes easily with Photoshop. Here are the quick and easy instructions.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Import the Canon photo image file into Photoshop.

Select the image size option from PhotoShop's  image menu.

Check the Image Resample Check Box on the Image Size dialog box that appears

Enter 800 into the width pixel dimensions box

Select Bicubic Sharpener(best for reduction) from the list box in the Image Size dialog box.

Examine the resulting image for picture quality. It should have retained its sharpness and overall fidelity.

Select Save for Web Devices option from the File menu

Select JPEG from the graphic file selection list box (second box from the top) in the Save for Web Devices dialog box that appears

Locate the Optimize Menu (series of small lines on the upper left corner on the Save for Web Devices) dialog box. Now select the "optimize for file size" option and select OK.

And your done.

Note though I used CS4. The location of menus and options may be different for different Photoshop versions.

Here is a 850 KByte version of the same photo.
