Electronics Tutorial #4: Ohms Law

If you want to build your own electronic circuits, one law you must learn and know how to use is Ohms law. Ohms law lets you calculate the current and voltage through and across a resistor. The basic equation that Ohms law states is that voltage is equal to the product of current and resistance. In equation form:

Equation 1: V= IR

If you know the voltage across a resistor and the current through a resistor you can compute the value of the resistor. Similarly, if you know the resistor value and the current through the resistor you can compute the voltage across the resistor.  For example if you put 2 Volts across a 1 Ohm resistor, from Ohms law you calculate that the current is 1 Ampere.

If you don't want to do the hand calculations required for Ohms law, you can always use a circuit simulator. The LTSpice circuit simulator, is a free simulator, that you can use to calculate the voltage across and the current through a resistor. In the LTSpice circuit schematic below, a 10 Volt battery is placed across a 1000 Ohm resistor. Using Ohms law, you can calculate that the current through the resistors would be 0.01 Ampere or 10 mA. A mA (milliamp) is 1/1000th of an Ampere.

LTSPICE Ohms Law Circuit Simulation
There are many advantages of using the LTSpice circuit simulator to analyze a circuit. One advantage is that it eliminates calculation errors. The second advantage is that you can analyze complex circuits, that would take hours of hand calculations, in seconds.  The third advantage is that it facilitates learning and allows you to build intuition about circuit design.

Algebra ebook page-break formatted for digital television and pocket projector based classroom instruction

"Many elearning savvy  teachers and tutors know how easy it is to give a full screen 60 inch screen show with just a smart phone and pocket projector. However, they have problems finding algebra ebooks and algebra apps that have the content needed for their needs and formatted for use with pocket projectors and digital televisions ..... Mark Stansberry, Author, Very Best Algebra Notes, www.BookMarkTutoring.com

The latest ebook to hit the Amazon's Books is "The Very Best Algebra Notes." With its seemingly non-technology name, one would not suspect that it hits the mark as the ideal algebra elearning tool.

As an elearning tool, it goes several steps above your everyday algebra ebook or app. And its not because the technology it is based on isn't the same or very similar. The fact of the matter its because the way the ebook's been formatted and its content.  Unlike many algebra ebooks and apps, the content within it has  been formatted so that both the words, graphics and equations scale across different reading devices.

And according to Mark Stansberry, author of the Very Best Algebra Notes, devices scalability means a lot to not only the student but the teacher. "Before I decided on how the book should be laid out for the optimum  ebook and slide projector user experience, I examined the layout and formatting of the leading math etextbooks on  different devices. These included the iPhone, the Android, a number of tablets and the PC. What I found was that the equations and figures didn't scale with the words from device to device.  The most typical problem I came across was smartphone incompatibility. When the book was viewed on a smartphone, the graphics did not scale with the words. This  makes many algebra ebooks inefficient to use on smart phones and many smaller size tablets.

To overcome that problem, Mark decided to format the book in what he calls "pagebreak to pagebreak " formatting. With pagebreak to pagebreak formatting,  the books pages are  guaranteed not to be broken up across pages when a different device is used. "  Mark explains though that he used  "pagebreak-to-pagebreak" formatting only for the body of the book, the 48 Algebra slides. For the all text sections of the book, the table of contents, summary, and cross-linked index he used standard text-scaled formatting. Mark added that "when a text block does not contain graphics or equations, such as the table of contents or index, there is no need to use pagebreak-to-pagebreak formatting, in fact its counterproductive from a publication point of view. "

The end result was an algebra ebook that could not only be used to review algebra on smart phones and tablets, but one that is very easy to use with pocket projectors and televisions. With "pagebreak-to-pagebreak" landscape formatting and a smartphone with an HDMI port, teachers, students and tutors, can give full screen slide shows that are easy to navigate using their smart phone as a remote control device.

But that's not all that makes this algebra book so great for teachers, tutors and students as an elearning tool. The other side of the story is that the book was designed based on the Common Core State Standards for Algebra 1. This means that teachers and students that use it can be assured that the content covered matches the course material that the common core standards strongly recommend.  Which means that students finally have a resource that can be used effectively to score higher on Algebra exams that are given across high schools across the country. To date over 45 states have adopted the common core state standards.

Online drawing gadget used to teach fundamentals of 3D drawing

BookMarkTutoring.com's 3D gadget is used to give students a way to visualize linear perspective drawing concepts. The 3D topology grid, presented above, vanishes toward a central vanishing point. The 3D box becomes smaller as it heads to the back of the grid. When the box crosses the central vision line, one can see the right side of the box and then the left side of the box come into and out of view.

BookMarkTutoring.com(based in Santa Rosa), builds educational gadgets and games based on elearning technologies for in-person and online tutoring. Through BookMark's  tutoring services,  students learn how to draw and plan compositions based on BookMark's online drawing tools and simulations, in-person demonstrations and established drawing procedures.

BookMark distributes fashion coloring page through Mochimedia

BookMarkTutoring.com (Santa Rosa, CA) has released one of its swim suit designs as an online Click and Color coloring page through Mochimedia (San Francisco, CA), one of the largest distributors of online interactive games.

The actual coloring page is titled simply, High Fashion Swim Suit Coloring Page. However, the high end swim suit design is something you might expect to find in a model's swimwear collection rather than on an online coloring page.  It is a two and a half piece swim suit with a split front tied together with an array of colorful straps. The design has a over 10 straps that can be individually colored to match any type of virtual beach scene.  Altogether the swim suit coloring page has 19 color sectionals that permit the user to create a rainbow of different fashion color compositions.

According to BookmarkTutoring.com, the coloring page serves as not only an educational fashion color composition tool, but also provides a fun way to start to learn about actual graphic design tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Mark Stansberry, developer and designer of the High Fashion Swim Suit Coloring Page, said that the overall theme of BookMark's fashion coloring pages is educational, "BookMark's coloring pages and game designs introduce the player to the different graphic design functions that one is likely to find in  popular graphic design programs. Our user interfaces are however simpler and in many cases more efficient and user friendly."
