The new math test specification has a completely different focus than the old SAT according to Mark Stansberry, founder of BookMark Tutoring. The emphasis is more on technical reasoning, logic, interpretation and function development than the old SAT test. In the old test, the emphasis was on basic math problem solving ability. If you knew your algebra and geometry, a little bit about functions and functional translation and were familiar with the format and type of math SAT question, trick questions you would do well.
The new Redesigned SAT math test is a different story. It tests the student on how well they can cull mathematical information from real world technical documents and develop mathematical models based on specific reading passages. Specifically, students must demonstrate their mathematics ability to create models from selected business, economic, scientific and technology documents. This not only requires the student have proficient technical reading comprehension skills, but a sound knowledge of functional models and how their responses are effected by the coefficients and constants for each of the major math functions..
